Alfie's Cat Rescue is a non-profit volunteer organisation based in Selby, North Yorkshire (YO8 postcode area). This policy explains what data we hold, why we hold it, and what rights you have over it under the UK GDPR and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR).
When you submit an adoption enquiry, foster expression of interest, or contact form, we collect your name, email address, phone number (if you provide it), and any details you share about your home circumstances. We use this information only to assess your enquiry and to contact you about it.
When you create an account, we additionally store your role (adopter, foster, volunteer or admin), an optional cat avatar selection, and a record of any applications associated with your account.
We do not sell or share your personal data with third parties. The only external services that process data on our behalf are listed under “Service providers” below.
Our lawful bases. We process adoption, foster and volunteer enquiries on the basis of our legitimate interest in rehoming cats and coordinating volunteers, and to take steps at your request before any adoption agreement. We process account data on the same legitimate-interest basis. Where you make a donation, we process the payment data necessary to perform that transaction (contract). You can object to legitimate-interest processing at any time – see “Your rights” below.
We use a small amount of browser storage to make the site work. Under UK PECR, both traditional cookies and modern browser-storage mechanisms (such as localStorage) are treated the same way, and we describe everything we use below.
These are required for the site to function and do not need your consent:
acr_session – a small client-readable hint that lets the navigation bar paint the correct signed-in state without an extra network request. Contains your first name and role only.acr_consent_v1 (localStorage) – stores your cookie preferences themselves.theme (localStorage) – remembers your light or dark mode preference. We do not currently use any analytics service. If we add one in future – for example, Cloudflare Web Analytics, which is privacy-friendly and cookieless – it will only load after you have opted in through the cookie preferences. You can change your choice at any time using the “Cookie preferences” link in the footer.
We use the following services to operate the site. Each processes only the minimum data necessary and is bound by their own privacy policy:
We keep adoption and volunteer enquiries for as long as your interaction with the rescue is active, plus a reasonable archive period (typically up to two years) so we can refer back to context for follow-up cats. You can ask us to delete your records sooner – see “Your rights” below.
Donation and payment records are handled by DonorBox and its payment providers, and retained for as long as we are required to keep them for accounting and tax purposes (typically six years under UK law). We do not store your card details ourselves at any point.
Under the UK GDPR you have the right to access, rectify, erase, or restrict the processing of your personal data, and to receive a copy of it in a portable format. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at hello@alfiescatrescue.org.uk or use our contact form.
We may update this policy as our practices evolve. The “Last updated” date above always reflects the most recent change, and any significant change to how we use analytics or cookies will also trigger a fresh consent prompt the next time you visit.
